RPG lover & finally bought the game after being on the fence for months. September 5, 2010 J. Long (Detroit, MI) RPGs are my thing. Whether it was Ultima back in the day, or Oblivion & Fallout 3, this is my genre of games. I had been dancing around Demon's Souls for months. I knew it was highly acclaimed and a game I should have purchased long ago. Part of the delay was having other games to play, but mostly it was the difficulty everyone talks about and the "mandatory online element". I like a challenge, but not to the point of being frustrating. With Demon's Souls now at $30 or less in most places, I had to give it a go. I'm glad I did.
I have only just finished the first level, beaten that boss, and started exploring in the 2nd level, and the game is a blast. I have died a lot, sure, but have been rewarded for learning, planning actions, and getting better at the game. It is very rewarding. The character customization is good, utilizing stats and effects that RPG players should be familiar with. The combat mechanics are superb. The variety of weapons and ability to enhance them has been enough to keep me impressed so far. The online elements of seeing others' messages/hints is cool. I also didn't know that you are not always subject to an invasion by another player into your world. I had thought you were and this was a turnoff for me (I should have researched more).
I love the game so far and highly recommend it to anyone that has been considering but is still on the fence (like I was). Don't let the descriptions of difficulty scare you off and go for it. I just wish I had bought it sooner....I've got 5 weeks to finish it before everything gets dropped for Fallout New Vegas. :)
Demon's Souls - Best game i've played yet on PS 3 August 27, 2010 Mike Rima (Little Elm, Tx United States) Although the game begins a little slow at first you quickly find that there are levels upon levels in this game. You can specialize your character in many different aspects, improve your weapons and equipment with enchantments, learn the magical system. It has awesome melee combat with detailed action and even has a good and very useful range combat component. After you get the ball really going in the game you find that there is even a mythology and history to this world that you are discovering. Very well rounded game i would compare it to a Doom like first shooter with the depth of the Ultima series from days of old! If you are interested in a fantasy rpg then this is a MUST HAVE!!!
No Hand Holding Here August 22, 2010 Rikki Thomas (MI USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have played this game for a while now over a 150 hrs playtime. So I have a lot experienced with this game. Its awesome! Here are some helpful tips for those who are interested in buying the game.
First, this games auto saves All THE TIME; kill an enemy saved, pick up an item saved, switch weapons saved. Those 1 star reviews that are crying about no checkpoint/saved system clearly don't see that blue circular icon that flashes every time the game saves. IF YOU NEED TO TAKE A BREAK JUST QUIT THE GAME IT WILL SAVE ALL OF YOUR PROGRESS UP UNTIL THAT POINT including enemies killed and souls gathered.
Second, be smart not stupid if that looks like a cliff then it's a cliff and chances are you will fall to your death. Pay attention to detail you cannot Rambo your way through this game. Treat each battle as if it were a boss battle SERIOUSLY. Find out what works best for you, there a bunch of different starting classes to choose from try them all and see which one you like best. Through your play through mix and match you items and gear if you are in a world with narrow walkways try switching to a straight weapon like a spear because swinging a sword could cause you to accidentally fall to your death.
Third, forget about your body it is not that important half health is a pain yes but you get increased attack power, increase defense, and you don't make any noise while moving (you become more stealthy). Griefers cannot invade if your in soul form. Also just realize that dying will happen and when it does just GET OVER IT. If you lose your souls so what losing souls is least important in the grand scheme of things. There are tons of souls where they came from the less you care about dying and soul loss the easier this game will become.
Fourth, STOP being greedy if you reach a point during a level when think you should stop go back and upgrade or get more items then do so. In each level there are merchants you can find so you can always restock items. If you need to practice moves or find out what a spell does simply go to the nexus and utilize that empty space with all of the messages past Stockpile Thomas. Whenever your in the nexus remove all of your weapons so you don't accidentally attack any of the npcs
Finally, the combat in this games falls 100% upon YOU attack to much no stamina will be left to block, roll or move for that matter. Please people research this game before playing and during play through. Read all of the in game messages descriptions and the very important server message at the start of the game. I mean do heavy research it will be critical in understanding this game.
I love this game not for crybabies or the easily frustrated but if you want a good rpg with minor frame rate issues and has a difficult but healthy challenge then buy this game.
Just not for me August 22, 2010 M. Braunschweig (Colorado) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I could see how people could like this game. Interesting settings and more realistic combat aka get hit 3-5 times and die. I don't care for the game though because:
1) Griefers -- I really don't want to be invaded all the time and die at the hands of people I can not possibly match in skill and loot. On the weekends, forgot about playing unless you like the PvP.
2) Grouping -- There is no grouping with your friends unless you're on the same servers and then it's hit and miss. This is the biggest flaw of the game. I don't want to randomly join other people. I want to play with my friends.
3) Laggy -- Not always, but I hate when the screen crawls and something runs up and bashes my brains in.
4) Loot -- Interesting stuff, but I like a more random / "different from everybody else" approach. I don't want to farm to get stones to make up the weapons.
5) No save points -- Saving after a long and often treacherous trek is the only option. Die in the (or even right at the end), and you start completely over.
6) Targeting -- Useful, but locking on and unlocking from groups will get you killed.
Glad others enjoy it though. "Death to the OLD ONE!!!"
Challenging August 21, 2010 James P. Make no mistake, this game is by far one of the most difficult, most brutal and ruthless games I've played in some time. However, the feeling of accomplishment you get for killing a boss, or clearing an area is quite the payout.
The unique online aspect really makes you feel like you are part of something much bigger, though this is a "mostly" single player game.
