Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3

Amazon.com Product Description
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.

MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy tidbits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."

Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumor has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Gold!   July 28, 2010
Daniel Miguel Varela
This game reinvents the concept of video game play and story line. Yes, there are multiple 45 minute long cut scenes but it didn't bother me as much as I'd thought. As far as depth, no storyline in another game (beside maybe a final fantasy or two) has any rival. What more, the cut scenes show off very good graphics that have aged well with time.
The story is filled with well defined and thought out characters that add a touch to originality of the MGS franchise. Snake has never looked better or older in this game and the detailing done to him and environment make this one of the best looking games out there.
There are several different types of weapons, including the unlock-ables which increase replay value, and believe me, there is a ton of it in here. There are multiple ways to completing missions and defeating enemies, or simply knocking them. The bosses are all unique and they actually do have a storyline as well, however tragic it reads. I only wish they would patch this game to the PS3's trophy system. Oh well.
My only real problem with this game was something minute in the storyline about AKIBA.
5 1/2 stars out of 5!

Anyway, if you own a PS3, this is a must have game for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Convoluted story and mind blowing gameplay   July 20, 2010
Devendra S. Mistry (San Diego, CA USA)
For those who don't know, Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid (MGS) series, is one of the best if not the best game directors out there. With creation of each new Metal Gear Solid game he has pushed the gaming experience to never before achieved heights. Metal Gear Solid 4, his latest game, will take you through an experience that you will never forget. So what is so spectacular about this game?

THE CHEMO-SUIT: As you know MGS series has been greatly about stealth. In this game, you get to use an awesome new suit that will take stealth to the next level. With this suit you can merge with surroundings in a way that will practically shock you. It is just impossible not to fall in love with this new gadget.

VARIETY IN GAMEPLAY: While stealth is a major element, it is NOT REQUIRED through out the game. Should you like you can just go around shooting your enemy on the whim. Now this will make the game a bit more challenging, but the good thing is the game allows you to have a choice. In this sense MGS separates itself from other stealth game such as Splinter Cell where stealth is absolute.

WEAPON CUSTOMIZATION: In this game not only you get to use a whole wide variety of weapons, but you can also customize them according to your likings. This truly adds to the gameplay experience and makes the campaign more involved.

AMAZING STORY: The great thing about Kojima's MGS games is he will set them in the current conflicts occurring in the world and relates them with the stories of individual characters in the most detailed way possible. The best part is he is really good at connecting dots. So as you progress through the story, he will make you curious about many events and towards the end, he will connect them and answer you questions in most satisfactory manner possible.

VARIETY IN ENEMIES: Yep, you will be facing a great different types of enemies in this game and taking down or passing through them will require you to use different strategies. This prevents the game from being redundant like most games these days.

RIDICULOUS BOSS BATTLES: I truly want to tell you how awesome the boss battles are; however, I don't want to spoil anything for you, so you will just have to play the game.

VARIETY OF AREAS/LEVELS: You will be traveling through war-torn cities, woods, snowy mountain base and many more awesome places. Again really don't want to spoil much.

AMAZING CHARACTERS: Revolver Ocelot, Raiden, Snake, Big Mama and many more (PLUS TWO SURPRISE CHARACTERS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND). All of these characters fit into story very well and good voice actors for them make the game very cinematic, almost like a movie.

MAJOR SUSPENSE: Again don't want to spoil.

DECENT MULTIPLAYER: While it was not necessary, this game has a decent multiplayer. You will probably not like it as much as some other games these days, but it will still keep you busy for months if you get into it.

GREAT REPLAYABILITY: Other than multiplayer, you can play campaign over and over again to unlock many different badges and concur many different difficulties.

So now that this title is GREATEST HITS and selling for so cheap, if you haven't played it already, YOU MUST CHECK IT OUT.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been GREAT....   July 19, 2010
D. Waters (Jacksonville, FL)
There's not much I can write about this game that hasn't already been said. This game had the potential to be GREAT, but all that went out the window with the insanely long cutscenes. I have never been so bored in my life. They went WAAAAAAY overboard with the story on this game, and just when you think the game is over....BAAAAM! another LONG, boring cutscene!

5 out of 5 stars Best game of it's type that I have ever played   July 17, 2010
V. Ransom (Elkhorn, WI USA)
I'm writing this review for all of those out there who see the high ratings/reviews (and even the crappy reviews) and still wonder if this is the game for them. For some of you it will be, and for some others it won't be.

Let me begin by saying, if you don't like stealth-action games, then you won't like this game. Pick your genre well when playing games, and you'll be set. However, if you like being stealthy, shooting enemies from a hidden vantage point, and the like, then you get plenty of that with this game. You can (and sometimes have to) change your stealth tactics depending on your environment: middle eastern battle fields, jungle environments, sneaking through the rainy streets of western Europe... all those and others can be approached in various ways.

On that note, the sheer number of choices you get in the game really make for a robust and dynamic game play feeling. You can choose from a multitude of weapons and distances to attack from. You can even choose to go hand to hand if you like. You could go all Rambo on them and blast everything in sight until you can escape or you can go through the entire game without killing a soul, if you really want a challenge.

The amount of varied game play is also worth taking note of. This is going from one style (first/third person shooter from Snake running/sneaking around) to a completely different style (the obligatory off the back of a vehicle chase style of MGS) to others that are even different still. I won't purposefully ruin anything, but the final two types are pretty epic and wonderfully appropriate for the final type.

There are a lot of complaints that the game has too many cut scenes and a complicated story that is too hard to follow. This game is meant to wrap the entire MGS series up to an ultimate ending. That will require a decent amount of story presented in a series of movie style cut scenes (and near movie quality by the way). However, I can assure you that there is plenty of game play in the game to balance out the cut scenes (the quickest you can beat the game is apparently somewhere around five hours, though I haven't gotten under six... and that's almost just running through the game and skipping every single cut scene including the very long last one).

Lastly, the replay factor is pretty high as one can use entertaining ammo (won't ruin anything here), the usual stealth cammo for near perfect invisibility, special weapons, and a bunch of unlockables based on the ratings/achievements you receive at the end of the game. All that while being able to collect more DP (money) to buy tons of stuff from the weapons dealer.

This game caters to those who are more casual stealth gamers to even difficult enough to challenge the most hard core stealth gamers out there (some ratings require insane marks to be met such as never being spotted, not killing anyone including bosses, not using a single continue, not using a single health regen item, and all that while completing the game in a really short period of time... like 5 hours). That all leads back to the number of choices the player has in the game. Your choices dictate how hard the game is for you (even beyond the choice of easy, normal, and hard when the game is started).

Let me say again, if you don't like MGS, stealth games, or robust/complex game play and story, then avoid this game as it was meant for people who do like some or all of those things. If you do like some or all of those things, then, chances are, you'll love this game for what it has to offer.

All that and I didn't even talk about how awesome the graphics are or how varied the boss tactics are... just know that the game deserves the ratings and good reviews it got based on the type of game it is.

5 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Solid 4 - Must Have   July 16, 2010
M. Owen (Fresno, CA)
This game just oozes incredible game design and perfected everything the prior installments had as shortcomings. On top of that, the story is unbelievably compelling and explains the series in a big way. If you have any interest in the Metal Gear Solid series, this is a must have.
