Editorial Review
Ever since the TV movie The Day After struck fear into the American television-watching public, hearts of nuclear bomb-fearing folk skip a beat when a heavy truck drives by. Feeding into that frenzy is this remake of the classic arcade game that graced the finest bowling alleys and arcades of the cold war-era early '80s.

Missile Command, the original arcade game, had a unique set of controls, including a trackball for lightning-fast positioning. Here, the PlayStation's analog stick serves as a poor replacement, never quite getting the right balance between hypersensitivity and sluggishness. The game challenges players to protect a set of cities along the bottom of the screen from an onslaught of branching enemy missiles from the sky. The original game is intact despite prettier graphics and the option of a two-player cooperative mode. In addition there is a new game that borrows heavily from the concept of the original Missile Command, but features slightly more mobility and screens that scroll up and down. In addition, players can purchase upgrades and special weapons with points they've earned after defeating each group of levels. For those who never played the original, this game is a solid shooter, but veteran missile commanders may be disappointed by this remake. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Includes the original arcade game in its entirety
  • 2-player cooperative mode offers new twist to old game
Cons:
  • Difficult to control
  • This remake doesn't offer much more than the original

4 out of 5 stars Classic or Ultimate?   August 19, 2004

In Missile Command you can play "Classic" mode; it has nice colors and graphics. The sound effects are pretty good and still provide the satisfying booms. The controls are good even with the analog controller; I don't know why other players complain. There is also "Ultimate" mode and looks even better with 3D graphics, but controlling the cross-hairs is too sluggish to reach the off-screen missiles. Then there is the problem of attack ships that sneak up to your missile launchers and destroy them. Since you are too busy trying to destroy the off-screen missiles, many times you won't see your launchers getting attacked at the bottom of the screen. The score takes a dive, mainly because the play mechanics are not implemented well in this aspect. So my suggestion is that you stick with "Classic" mode it is as fun as the old arcade machine.

Pros:
+classic mode
+co-op gameplay
+nice colors
+good sound effects
+good controls
+good music
+good FMV

Cons:
-ultimate mode sucks
-game cheats
-lacks variety

3 out of 5 stars just like the old game   March 11, 2002
I gave this as a gift, so the review is more from my friend than from me... she was a total Missle Command junkie. She was very happy to get this game and really likes it but wished they'd improved the graphics and improved the controls.

Missile command 3d is a great updated remake of the classic arcade game. Great graphics, fun gameplay, and it's suitable for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars No More Quarters!   December 18, 1999

I spent way too much time at the local pub feeding quarters in to the arcade version of Missile Command. That was 20 years ago. All that's missing here is the need for a pocket ful of change and the dart players that would bump into me at some critical juncture of the game. I was never a master of the original. . . it had something to do with my main activities at the bar. . . but my friend was the best ever. We both played this new game. Good news? Plenty! Great graphics. Greatsound. Just as i hoped it would be. Bad news? You have to keep your kids away from it if you ever want to play!

Missile Commamd is a classics game for people that played it and remember playing it. Its just like it was. No new 3d graphices or has not been all redone up and just with the name on it. Its easy to play and fun to play. It has a built in challenge it start easy and get hard so if you like a game that starts out easy and get harder this is the game for you.
